Von won 2nd place out of 17 CPS schools in the 2011 CPS Debate Tournament
Von Steuben had an excellent tournament over the weekend. In the Junior Varsity (JV) Division, Von had three of the top 10 speakers, with Jazmine Mercado earning 9th place speaker, Sean Horwitz earning the 3rd place speaker, and Brianna Lester earning the 2nd place speaker. Two JV teams made the quarterfinals – Sean Horwitz and Nasser Khan and Giovanni Bermeo and Brianna Lester.
In the Varsity Division, Quddus Akinlusi and Jesse Okwu reached the quarterfinals. Those debaters combined with Jonathan Barajas, Karina Barajas, Alejandra Delcid and Beatriz Jimenez to win the 2nd place sweepstakes award – Von was 2nd out of 17 schools.

ICHV'S 17th Annual Student Voices Contest
Topic: Gun Violence creates a ripple effect, harming more than just those who are directly involved. How do you think the fear, anger, and sadness caused by gun violence effects communities as a whole?
Prizes: Winners receive a new COMPUTER and a $25 bookstore gift certificate. The winners' teachers receive a $100 gift certificate.
Eligibility: Illinois students in grades 1-12 may submit works in one of three categories: Essay, poetry, and art.

American Museum of Natural History Young Naturalist Awards
Young Naturalist Award is a research-based science contest for students in grades 7-12. Winners can receive: Cash awards, expense-paid trip to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, publication of winning essays on website.

Bank of America Charitable Foundation's Student Leaders Program
The Bank of America Charitable Foundation's Student Leaders Program is currently accepting applications for the 2012 program. Since the program's inception in 2004, Bank of America has recognized more than 1,600 high school students as Student Leaders who have exhibited passion for improving their communities. The program helps students gain a greater understanding of how nonprofits create impact in the community and develops them as the next generation of community leaders through two components:
A summer 2012 eight-week paid summer internship with selected nonprofit organizations and a week-long all-expense paid Student Leadership Summit in Washington DC., July 15-20.
Deadline for students to apply is January 25, 2012.
